Eclipse Finance Day & Eclipse Con

Eclipse has grown from a simple open source Java development environment into a platform for large-scale enterprise applications. The Eclipse Finance Day on Oct. 16th in Zurich showed impressive examples of recent developments and usage of eclipse technology in financial institutions. Eclipse Con on Oct. 23rd in Ludwigsburg will be the next opportunity for exchanging experiences and ideas.

Having visited the Eclipse Finance Day, it was especially interesting to see that code generation and highly-specialized domain-specific languages (DSLs) are used to solve tasks in software migration and maintenance. The tool Xtext  contributed significantly to this development and seems to enjoy increasing popularity.

In the context of large financial institutions, several examples of Model Driven Development and modularization were presented. It seems that large projects become much more tractable using these technologies.

It was very interesting to see how other teams utilize the Eclipse technology stack in finance. The next event is Eclipse Con, Oct. 23rd, (http://www.eclipsecon.org/europe2012/) with a wider view on applications. This promises to be interesting too, so see you there!
